Invisalign Care Tips
Invisalign utilizes a series of clear aligners that are replaced every two weeks with the next aligner in your specially designed series. These aligners are designed to gradually adjust your teeth into the correct position. Because the aligners can be removed, the technique for caring for the aligners is different from what you would see with metal braces.
Invisalign Aligner Care Tips
Good oral hygiene and the proper amount of upkeep will keep your Invisalign system clean. While the aligners are removable for drinking or eating, you can create a buildup of bacteria if you do not clean your aligners before you put them back in. The care for Invisalign aligners is simple, and includes:
- Removing Them to Eat – Because Invisalign aligners can be removed, there are almost no food restrictions; however, this means that you must take them out before you eat anything or drink anything besides water. Leaving them in will cause food particles to rest between your teeth and aligners, causing issues. It will also stain your aligners easily or cause scratches that are visible.
- Rinsing – When you remove your aligners to eat or drink, you should immediately rinse them. When plaque and saliva dries on your Invisalign aligners, it creates an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and can affect their fit on your teeth.
- Soaking – Use the official Invisalign cleaning crystals, Retainer Brite, and Denture cleaner to soak your aligners when they are removed. These will keep your aligners sanitized and stain free.
- Brushing – Gently brush your aligners in a circular motion both inside and out with a very soft toothbrush or a retainer safe brush and a gentle toothpaste. Don’t scrub hard with your normal toothbrush or toothpaste, however, as these may damage the aligners. Talk to Dr. Rashidi to find out which cleaners are best for you.
- Good Oral Hygiene – The most important way to ensure that your aligners do not harbor bacteria and plaque is to practice good oral hygiene. Make sure that you brush and floss your teeth before you insert your aligners. Because Invisalign aligners are specially fitted to your teeth, failing to brush and floss properly risks trapping food between your aligners and increases the risk of dental problems.
Taking care of your Invisalign aligners is as simple as keeping up on good dental hygiene practices and making sure your aligners are kept clean.
